*MECHANICAL DESIGN ENGINEER*
*Location: *Mequon, Wisconsin
*Reports to: *Vice President of Engineering & Quality
*SUMMARY OF POSITION:*
Under general supervision, the Mechanical Design Engineer (MDE) performs product and process design and development tasks for the manufacture (DFM) of new products and components as well as improve existing products and processes that adhere to technical and organizational policies in support of overall business and corporate objectives.
The MDE is responsible for providing direction as necessary to the production floor in moving designs, jobs, processes, and initiatives forward.
The MDE will provide technical replies as necessary to internal and external customer inquiries as required while maintaining good relations, working with cross functional groups within various departments of the company and at the customer to ensure effective representation of the company on technical matters.
*DESCRIPTION OF ROLE:* To design, plan, document and coordinate assigned duties to ensure optimum DFM, product effectiveness, performance, and reliability at the most economical cost.
*ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:* This list is not all-inclusive and may be expanded to include other duties and responsibilities, as management may deem necessary from time to time.
· Perform conceptual design activities involving Steel Structures, and Hydraulic, Pneumatic and Electrical Control Systems leading to the successful creation of new and/or improved products.
· Prepare design, analysis, test requirements, performance, and cost information as required for existing or new products.
· Identify opportunities to eliminate cost that do not add value to the process or product, and within the scope of authority for this position, implement the reduction.
· Provide timely and accurate drawings, Mfg Routings, Bills of Material, Checklists, Work Instructions, and other engineering documentation to support efficient product manufacturing.
· Review design criteria with value engineering principles; develop and recommend new and improved process techniques; and assure optimum procedures are available for shop use in production.
· Review existing designs and manufacturing processes that are found to generate operating, design and/or manufacturing defects, and lead team-oriented Corrective Action events resulting in successful resolution.
· Work “hands-on” with manufacturing to resolve any problems encountered in the fabrication and manufacture of products.
· Lead, participate in, and contribute to process improvement and design for manufacturability (DFM) activities · Resolve customer and field problems on assigned products.
· Proficiently use a variety of engineering tools and technologies with a keen knowledge of 3D CAD, Simulation and FEA (SolidWorks), ERP systems, MS Office Suite, and others (will train).
· Review and prioritize customer complaints to determine where emphasis should be placed to prevent recurrence; modify deficient aspects of design and/or process as appropriate.
· Completes other duties from time to time as assigned.
*QUALIFICATIONS:* Education and/or Experience: This position requires a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering, a keen ability to use 3D Design, Simulation and FEA Structural Analysis Software to create and optimize designs, 3+ years of design, engineering, or related experience.
Experience in a metal fabrication environment is a plus.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Effective oral, written and communication skills are essential.
The ability to read, interpret and create drawings, schematics, and documents such as product and equipment specifications, operating instructions, procedure manuals, and contracts is required.
Should be able to interpret instructions from a variety of forms.
A critical thinker that’s self-motivated and is comfortable working individually and within teams.
The ability to complete objective analysis and evaluations of issues to form judgements.
The ability to respond to questions promptly and effectively from peers, management and customers as well as other employees of the organization is essential.
The ability to organize activities, priorities and allocate time as necessary to maintain efficient operations with a keen eye on deadlines.
